Summer of Ukulele

Ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn and bring with you anywhere, which makes it the perfect summer instrument. This article outlines all of the reasons why and how to get started.

Why ukulele is the perfect summer instrument:

  • Inexpensive.
You can buy a cheap used uke and learn the basics on it just fine. If you end up wanting better quality, you can upgrade and even then it’s not too expensive.
  • Easy to learn the basics.
Especially if you already know any other string instrument. Even if you have zero experience, it’s really not difficult to make some music on the uke. I’ll leave a practice plan with some easy songs below.
  • Bring it anywhere.
It’s about the size of the worlds smallest violin. You can nearly fit it in your pocket. Throw it in a bag and go for a hike. Bring it with you on a plane, you don’t have to worry about ruining it.
  • Basically everyone owns one.
Even if you don’t want to bring it on a trip, they are pretty common instruments. Especially if you like to go to Hawaii. Most all music stores have them, and you can always find them used on FB marketplace or places like that. Your friend or family you’re going to visit probably have one lying around.

Startup Guide for Ukulele

The first things I would learn are:

  • C major & A minor chords.
Learn the chords with the left hand first, it’s literally just one finger per chord. Then learn a basic up and down strum, just to get the feel of how to strum. Not shooting for perfection yet, just getting a basic understanding. See below for chord chart.
  • C major scale.
Scales are super easy and sound very musical. On the uke, you only need to learn 8 notes across 3 strings in order to play a full scale. See below for scale.
  • An easy song from the videos below.
YouTube is a great source for song tutorials. I’ll link some good videos I’ve found but you’re more than welcome to seek out your own.

  1. […] Camping/Trips. Bring your instrument on trips. Unless you’re flying, in which case I don’t recommend bringing your instrument. If you are flying, or if you don’t want to bring your prized instrument, buy a cheap ukulele and pack it in your bag. Anyone can learn the basics of ukulele pretty quickly, in fact I will probably make a short blog about this, if so I will link it HERE. […]
