Welcome and congratulations on taking the first steps of your musical study
Here are some of the basics on what lessons are all about. This will answer some common questions and give you a basic idea on how things work. If you have any other questions, just reach out!
Supplies/Materials
For your first lesson, we just go through some basic things, so it’s okay if you don’t have everything right away. You really just need your instrument for the first lesson, and if there’s anything important you’re missing we’ll figure it out. Here’s what you’ll eventually need to get though.
Beginners will need either a Method Book or a blank Tablature Book. We usually talk about which one is right for you during the first lesson. If you already have a book or other materials, bring them.
For guitar, you’ll need guitar picks. For electric guitar and bass, you don’t need to bring a cable or amp, I have all that in my lesson room. For all string instruments, bring a tuner if you have one. Bring any other accessories you have, like straps or capos.

Practice Method
A good practice routine is essential to your progress and the flow of our lessons. This is a vast topic which I focus on during lessons and write about on my blog. I highly encourage you to check it out and talk to me about it. I can boil it down to basics with this though:
Practice at least 15 minutes every day, or every other day. Repetition is your best friend during practice. Play slowly at first. Stay focused and engaged. Set goals.
How’s he/she doing?
I highly encourage parents to periodically check in and stay involved in their kid’s progress. I only get 30 minutes a week with them, so it’s better to have some extra support at home for the student, and some communication between us about their progress. Who knows, you might catch the music bug yourself!
Also, it’s a good idea to have each other’s contact info in case of last minute changes or anything like that.
If there’s anything else that wasn’t covered here just shoot me a message and I’ll be happy to help. Looking forward to working with you!
